Topological magnetic defects

SPICE Workshop on Spin textures: Magnetism meets Plasmonics, July 23rd - 25th 2024

Maria Azhar

In magnetism, complex spin textures are realized through the interplay of magnetic interactions with fundamentally quantum mechanical origins. These spin textures possess an extra degree of stability if they are topologically protected. I will give an introduction to the stability mechanisms of different magnetic configurations such as (helical) spin spirals, vortices, skyrmions, hopfions, multi-q structures including skyrmion lattices, and dislocations of helimagnetic order, such as the recently predicted and observed screw dislocation defects. I will review magnetic interactions and the mathematical framework in terms of of homotopy groups in the topological classification of magnetic defects.
