Research in spintronics, where the quantum-mechanical behavior of electron spins is exploited to manipulate ferromagnets with magnetic polarization, has advanced significantly.
Another representative form of macroscopic electronic order is electric polarization, which includes that found in ferroelectrics. Here, we introduce the beginnings of a new type of electronics in which this electric polarization is controlled through quantum-mechanical effects of electrons.
