Soft phonons and related phenomena in ferroelectrics

SPICE Workshop on Ferrons and Magnons: friends or foes? July 7th - 9th, 2026

Jorge Iñiguez

I will present work concerning lattice dynamical properties of ferroelectric and related materials. I will discuss diverse effects, from lattice thermal transport [1,2] to the formation and manipulation of electric quasiparticles [3,4,5], which I will illustrate through atomistic simulations. I will summarize our progress toward a systematic derivation of dynamical Landau and Ginzburg-Landau theories for ferroelectric and related materials, with all effective parameters obtained from first-principles calculations in a fully predictive manner [6,7]. Finally, I will emphasize key differences between ferroelectric and magnetic order [8], with the hope this may inform a comparison between soft polar phonons and magnons.

Work funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), as of late through grants C21/MS/15799044/FERRODYNAMICS, INTER/ANR/24/18960894/TOPOTHERM, and AFR/18810392/LIGHTTRAP. Projects
done mainly in collaboration with M. Pulzone, N. Cernov, C.A.M. Scott, and H. Aramberri (LIST), as well as R. Rurali (ICMAB-CSIC) and C. Cazorla (UPC).
