Magnetic imaging on the nanometer scale

SPICE Workshop on Quantum Functionalities of Nanomagnets, June 17th - 19th 2025

Martino Poggio

Magnetic imaging techniques provide invaluable insights into material properties that are not accessible through optical or topographic images. They shed light on magnetization patterns, spin configurations and current distributions. Unlike bulk measurements of transport, magnetization, susceptibility or heat capacity, magnetic imaging can provide microscopic information about length scales, inhomogeneity, and interactions.
In this tutorial, I will discuss the sensitive magnetic imaging techniques most relevant for nanomagnetic and 2D systems. I will compare their capabilities their required operating conditions, and assess their suitability to different types of source contrast, in particular, magnetization and current density.
I will also discuss the prospects for improving each technique and speculate on its potential to address poorly understood condensed matter phenomena. I will close by discussing recent imaging experiments carried out in my group on 2D and chiral magnets, which yield new insights into their underlying magnetism.
