Fractional Chern Insulators and Heavy Fermions in Twisted Moire Samples

SPICE Workshop on Hybrid Correlated States and Dynamics in Quantum Materials, May 14th - 16th 2024

Andrei Bernevig

I will review the physics of fractional Chern insulators with a tutorial perspective for the first half of the talk, focusing on early models and then moire systems. An understanding of both the single particle and the many body spectrum will be provided.
I will then present the latest “state of the art” calculations on the moire fractional Chern insulators, in MoTe2 and Pentalayers and show that our theoretical understanding of the physics, despite claims to the contrary in the literature, is very limited.
