Travel Information

SPICE is located on the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, accessible by a 30-minute train or car ride from Frankfurt International Airport (FRA).

By Plane

There are two airports near Mainz:
1. International Airport Frankfurt/Main (FRA)

S-Bahn (line S8) transit from Frankfurt/Main to Mainz main station starting every 30 minutes (some regional trains are an alternative)
duration: 18-26 minutes

2. Airport Frankfurt-Hahn (Hunsrück) (HHN)

Bus transfer to Mainz main station: ORN from terminal 3 (leaves Frankfurt-Hahn every 3 hours)

car route from Frankfurt-Hahn to Mainz: 
Take highway B 50 to get to autobahn A 61, on-ramp "Rheinböllen" direction "Ludwigshafen." 
At "Dreieck Nahetal" change to autobahn A 60 direction Mainz. Leave autobahn A 60 at exit "Saarstraße."

By Car

From the west (i.e. from direction Bonn/Cologne)
Travel autobahn A 60 crossing "Autobahn-Dreieck Mainz" direction Darmstadt.
Leave autobahn A 60 at exit "Mainz-Finthen".
Follow the street sign "Saarstraße/Innenstadt" straight ahead through the traffic circle "Europaplatz".
Take exit "Universität".
From the east (i.e. from direction Würzburg/Darmstadt)

Travel autobahn A 60 crossing "Autobahn-Dreieck Rüsselsheim" OR travel autobahn A 63 crossing "Autobahnkreuz Mainz" to get to autobahn A 60 direction Bingen.
Leave autobahn A 60 at exit "Mainz-Finthen".
Follow the street sign "Saarstraße/Innenstadt" straight ahead through the traffic circle "Europaplatz".
Take exit "Universität".
From the north (i.e. from direction Kassel)

Follow autobahn A 66.
At "Schiersteiner Kreuz" change to autobahn A 643 direction Mainz.
Follow autobahn A 643 to "Autobahn-Dreieck Mainz" and change here to autobahn A 60 direction Darmstadt.
Leave autobahn A 60 at exit "Mainz-Finthen".
Follow the street sign "Saarstraße/Innenstadt" straight ahead through the traffic circle "Europaplatz".
Take exit "Universität".
Parking on campus is available only with special permission. Please see the attached site plan for parking in the nearest vicinity of the campus. Parking is also available at the near-by football stadium, which is about 200 meters from the University’s main entrance.

By Train

The City of Mainz has one main and multiple other train stations. Schedule information is provided by Deutsche Bahn. Mainz Main Sation is the most convenient one to get to the University by taxi or by bus (see schedule below)

A short bus ride brings you from the Main Station to University:
After leaving the train, follow sign "Exit City". Outside the train station go to the bus stops on their right side. There are two different platforms:
(1) Platform F: take bus 69 and get off at the stop "Staudinger Weg" (6th stop). The Institute is at Staudinger Weg 9, 2nd floor, north wing.

(2) Platform G: take the bus number 9, 54, 55, 58 or 68 and get off at the stop "Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-weg" (3rd stop). After the bus ride one should cross the highway using the bridge.

You can buy the bus ticket directly from the bus driver or use an automatic ticket machine. Information on public transport within and around Mainz is provided by Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund.
